VIATEL built 21 telecommunications base stations to cover MEO’s 4G network in 21 parishes belonging to 16 municipalities in Portugal’s inland. These parishes had been signalled in the National Communications Authority plan due to internet coverage problems. VIATEL built fibre-optic (transmission) lines, civil engineering and electrical infrastructures and installed 4G network active telecommunications equipments. Thanks to VIATEL’S intervention, the inhabitants of these parishes – Alijó, Arcos de Valdevez, Armamar, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Chaves, Cinfães, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Góis, Idanha-a-Nova, Mêda, Oleiros, Penedono, Sabugal, São João da Pesqueira and Sertã – now enjoy better internet access, with the 4G network rendering this connection to the “global world” much faster. The works also included the installation of telecommunication towers, racks for electrical and transmission/reception equipment and fibre-optic cables, to power these telecommunication base stations.
