The Viatel/PDT consortium has completed the construction of eight telecommunications towers and associated works in a 56 – kilometre section of the Faro – Vila Real de Santo António secondary line, part of the Algarve railway line. The infrastructures allow the customer (IP – Infraestruturas de Portugal) to install a GSM-R radio communications system that will increase the quality of voice and data communications between the trains and the Operation and Control Centres. Additionally, it will allow the development of new services aimed at optimizing train traffic, simultaneously increasing safety in railway transportation. This network is private and not accessible to ordinary rail users. Viatel and PDT teams – both companies belonging to Visabeira Global – were divided into several areas: construction, electrical, HVAC and communications (optical fibre). About fifteen people were involved in the project, from field teams to technical and back office staff, supporting the project’s technical direction.
